Valfire's News

Posted by Valfire - October 26th, 2010

Throughout the years, I have been an avid fan of Newgrounds as far back as the fateful day back in 1995.
Hell, back then when the website was devoted to killing pop-icons & other celebrities, alot of the early ones were done in HTML!

It was set up like you had to click the image for it to progress.
Practically all it was was links and images, until Tom had gotten ahold of flash.

And well, the rest is history.
When the portal opened up to the public, is when the site really began to develop what I still consider the golden years.

Everyone had to provide their own graphics as well as scrounge up the few sources everyone had at the time.
And yet, one thing they all had in common was that dark gritty nature, as well as original moused in graphics.

Now in comparison, the average movie back then was roughly 300-500 kb and that took a while to load.
As nowdays its roughly 5 mb minimum, with daily features capping as much as 15 megabytes every single day.

Artistically, the movies have gotten better.
Even though they are done with so many programs I don't even consider them to be 'flash' movies/games any longer.

Adobe Photoshop this, After Effects CS-whatever that..
Heres a handful of some of the first portal entries I have ever seen back then...

Scorpio Mercenary Group
Pac-Man Gets Wasted
Yoda, Drunk on the Set
29 Cents In Life
Quake III Wazzup?!?
boy
Resident Evil-Mon

And so on and so forth..

Overall I would say the one that stuck with me the most was, Scorpio Group.
As at the time I hadn't quite seen anything like it, as the characters in it were not only original, but they were memorable.

Sure they had plenty of shit back then, but once in a while, it was actually worth seeing.
Nowdays there are so many things , alot of which are probaly worth seeing, but I just don't care anymore.

Like I might look if its on the frontpage and if the name/thumbnail looks interesting enough , but I rarely search up for a movie.

Things just haven't been the same.
Maybe someday i'll resume this rant.

And gentlemen, as of today that rant continues... now.

Regarding sprite based movies.

In my ealier years I was an active spriter of older video game based sprite movies.
As early as December 2001 in fact.

Back then there were no real standards for the video game flashes aside from Clark Lybeck, Randy Solemn and SplashKhat.

Hell, I remember when this was one the coolest thing I had seen.
Although I personally preferred this one simply due to it's mas selection of objects & music loops.

I was more or less a spectator back then, so I never had anything of my own to contribute.
Always had hopes of doing so one day.
Though little did I know how anything about manipulating Macromedia Flash.

Always though doing things with sprites was a trip.
Years later to this day my thoughts have not changed.

All though... Along the way, something was amiss.
And admittedly, when I first submitted a project to newgrounds, it was no biggy.
Even though my skills were quite lacking, it didn't take me too long to learn.

In the recent years, spriting has generally only consisted of just absurd humor, or mostly fighting.
Not to say that fighting is always a bad thing, especially with Rebaz the Double Dragon sprite master.

Hell, fighting scenes are always a kick as they have been since Final Fantasy Gaiden.

Though back then the movies didn't always involve fighting and they were generally a long drawn out random adventure.
Or perhaps a movie with such stupidity you couldn't help but love it anyway.

Admittedly, 2003 was a very productive year for me as well as many great sprite artists.
Though 2004 came...

Thats when the sprite movies began to take a decline from what I have seen.
People stopped being original.

As then it just... degraded into some sort of trivial rivalry.
With authors attacking each other in their movies.

Now while this can be funny as hell, I just don't see the point of all this.
We shouldn't be thrashing each other, hell we should all be out there putting together awesome shit!

If theres one thing we don't need.
Is bad or boring retellings of video game plots.
Such as 'Oh noes, Lavos/Kefka has Returned!'

No. Its not amusing, its boring.
WHY would we want to see that, rather than watching Ben from Mystic Quest came out of the closet?

Its not a hard formula to follow really, just entertainment!
Yes, 2004 was officially the most dissapointing year I have ever seen in sprite animators.

I mean hell, even an inconsistent oldie of a sprite film is more entertaining than most of the shit that happened in 04!
Remember the time Kirby went to Egypt?
Out of all the places i'd never thought i'd see that pink piece o shit, Egypt is one of them...

Perhaps one of the only examples of good things that came out of 04 was Hell Fire's Sprite Survivor!

All though it looks familiar to something else , but it doesn't really matter because their all quite entertaining.
Even though the FF Survivor Series was never finished, it still lives on in our sweet memories.
Oh rest in peace sweet sweet flash...

While I understand not all of the parts are on newgrounds, I do however own all of the released movies, so if anyone wants to see them just send a note to my inbox.
Damn shame they never released the finale though.

Speaking of things that go incomplete, whatever happened to Final Fighting Fantasy?
Its gone!
Why has Splashkat forsaken the spriters in their hour of need???

Even though it involves so much fighting.
Fact is its still a hell of alot more original than what goes on these days.

People used to have such originality!
Such weird yet totally awesome visions.

Even in the early days, the quality standard hadn't been achieved yet, though that didn't stop people from trying at least.
Hell they had attitude!
What if it was the priest whom wanted to assasinate Link so he could be the next hero of Hyrule?

Or how about that time Link was home alone???

People can come preaching the gospel to me about that sprite films aren't as stale as I say but you know what?
My opinion isn't changing.
The sprite movies have gotten stale.

The animators need to open up their creativity network and get animating for some new classics!
I mean hell, theres just no excuse for this.

Good god, even this is more entertaining than most shit i've seen nowadays!

Even though its been a cruel few years for spriters ,I think its really because the sprite movies just haven't been worth watching because they are so stale!

For the good classics such as Link's Quest For Ass , Parovadius or this that or the other thing.

I've chosen my path in the sprite film ,and I want the days of the classical random adventures to resume.

Don't make me come down there.

This rant may yet again be resumed when I think of another chapter of rants to rant about.

Days of Old redux

Well guys...

This is a beacon calling out to all fans of the Fishyswa or as he was known on Newgrounds as Groundpoint.

Its high time the series be resurrected.

So after alot of file scrounging, finally managed to locate the most of them.

They can be downloaded here.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=N4MXLIL4

HOWEVER!
The collection has all but 3 films and I require all the aid of anyone whom has the following 3 movies!
As I do not have these apparently.
So here are their names & their portal serial numbers.

GOOD TIMES THE MOVIE 2 - 48889
GOOD TIMES 25 - 98597
GOOD TIMES 28 - 391314

And their exact file names.

98597_flashes.swf
48889_20th.swf
391314_goodtimes28.swf

Thats them & their portal IDs so if you happen to have any of them lying around, please report back to me!

And I kindly request that any fellow fan, please search your File Archives in case you saved portions of the franchise.

Thank you, and may the Good Times be with you!

As I said last time I would be hunting for another FPS that desperately tried to be something that it just couldn't be.

Such as Psychotoxic, and fortunately something turned up sooner than I thought.
Be it that of which is called 'Cryostatis'.

From what I can tell its the bastard child of Resistance:Fall of Man and F.E.A.R.
Oddly, I found out about it the same way I did for Psychotoxic.

In roughly the same location at the same freakin Bestbuy.
As with Psychotoxic, it was the only copy too.

Since its fairly new, if not new, it is still like about thirty bucks, which I shall spend no such for ranting fodder.

I'll wait until it goes for like five bucks or so.
And even then I know its a sad five dollars.

Haven't finished my run of Psychotoxic, as I had to delete it since I needed space for other projects.
But really, I just need to get an external HD to stash my cd extractions.

Fortunately not all is lost as I have decided to play through Crysis for now.

Ok i've been playing alot of games lately.

Yet I think its time I broke them down once again.
Ok as you probaly don't remember, though I said I was currently doing a playthrough of Psychotoxic.
A badly coded FPS game that is simply unhealthy to a PC to install, much less play.

To sum it up, it was a wanna be acid trip.
And a bad one at that.

So while I challenge people to show me an even worse FPS that was made sometime preferably in the brackets of 2004-2008, I just want to add that I am also looking for more wastes of my precious time.

Now while that sums up the bad categlory, lets discuss one of the fewer things that still bring up that gleam of hope for gaming today.

World of Goo.
Really i'm not much of a puzzle fan, as I am still having nightmares of Tetris and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine from my younger days.

Yet, whats not fun about a game that runs at a blazing FPS, with little blobs with eyes that you can use in a sandbox like state in order to create living structures attempting to gain access to a pipe that really sucks if you catch my drift.

Damn it that is actually fun.
So fun I managed to get it for only five bucks and all though I won't consider it to be the 'best five bucks I have ever spent', as a certai music cd has the honor of that title.
Its still great.

Ok, and now onto the downright absurd.

The Graveyard.

Ok, how does one define a game?
Perhaps the platformer take of running around shooting an endless birage of curious shots of energy.
Maybe something about going rescue a princess from certain reptiles?
Ok how about an old lady whom goes to the graveyard to sit on a bench.

Yeah thats right, thats exactly what this ones about.
Unlike any other game I have played, this is the first time I actually get to play an old lady whom is practically dead to the world, as she takes a stroll through the graveyard with her trusty cane.

Unfortunately, this woman doesn't have it in her brittle old bones to sprint, jack cars, and pump thousands of bullets into thy flesh of enemies.

No the only thing shes capable of doing is walking painfully slow toward a bench, then sitting on it as music springs up out of nowhere, as she loses herself in her own trail of thought.

Potentially fatal if you get the full version.

The good, the bad, & the absurd

Well recently I have finally obtained Dragon Force after all of these years.
Be it one of the rare titles on the Sega Saturn that were actually good, I couldn't pass up this chance.

Despite my woe of lack of time to play it, I finally managed to scrounge up the time to play it before the beginning of a quest to Disneyworld.

I honestly cannot recall the last time I sat down and played a game for twelve solid hours.
Yeah I think I found a title that may even be able to top Ogre Battle.

It carries the same graphical charm as Ogre Battle, which is a big plus.
And yet it maintains some classical Gemfire gameplay as well.

Only not nearly as tight on the rationing department.
The last time I had this much fun with a video game was back in the 90s and well...
Of course this game was made in the 90s so no wonder.

So i'll be hooked on this for a while...

SO lets overlook the games I am currently playing.

Actively.

Animal Crossing
Disgaea : Afternoon of Darkness
Dragon Force
Ragnarok Online

So while I am conquering Disneyworld at the moment, I am afraid
that my gaming choice will have to wait.

(Except for Disgaea which i'm playing on the go)

See you at the halfway.

Its been a long time since I was actively submitting on NG.
A bit too long if you ask me.

All though once again, mankind has taken failure to a whole new level.
I decided to sit back and let the people entertain me for a change.

And what do they go and do?
Follow in Randy Solemn's steps and make an endless supply of Mario Movies.

Mistaken!
Mario wasn't the only game with sprites for god's sake.

Every movie doesn't need to be serious/epic!
Why can't we just have a sprite movie like they were made back in 2002/2003?

Those were the best years for the sprites!
Not because they were trying to be anything epic, but all because we just made the sprites do whatever the hell we saw fit!

That guy who does the earthbound films, Tool-Of-The-System deserves a few academy awards and an oscar.

Hell! Just look at what Harvest Moon could be! http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/
93235

Weary I am, of all of the repeats nowdays.
I've seen the latest Sprite TV, and while it was a great breath of fresh air, I feel the second one was better still.

Though apparently the new 'standard' is movies that require eight different programs to make, and end up vastly 20+ mb in size.

Yeah thats the new daily grand prize minimum.
15+ megabytes.

Back in 2001, if your movie was over 3 mb it was trashed for being too big.
They didn't bother watching it then, they just voted it 1 or zero.
And those were the golden times!

Everyones just doing the same old shit since 2004.
And to think, I thought the time of the Xiao Xiao ripoffs was a dark age.

Get off your asses and make some god damn entertaining sprite films!

The times often change, don't they?
Kind of like animals, theres something I have noticed in human nature.

When the parent gives birth to a child, the outcome of the child will always vary.
Be it the bastard child we never wanted, to the spoiled little angel everyone can't help but simply adore.

Hell even in some places, the youth are cast out into the wild to fend for themselves.

As I was saying, the times come and go.
All though as with this human nature, it seems that a good lot of us, even though we give birth to these wonderful little bastards...

Eventually we can come to hate them, or dislike them in some fashion.
Hence this is when parents give their child 'the boot'.

Now thats fine & dandy.
Ok not really but, it pains me to see this behavior on Newgrounds.

Only the other night , it came to my attention ony of my favorite NG artists, Groundpoint has been removing his Good Times series as well as pretty much the majority of his flash movies!

All though I am not one to question his reasoning.
Though hes really hurting me here, as the Good Times series was probaly one of the first actual series on NG that I liked.

For 7 years that guy always brought good entertainment to the portal.
And now hes taking the knife to his own creation.

Its one thing I never really liked...
When the artists somehow get sick by the sight of their own creations.

Course thats a hypocritical statement as I have exchanged some of my own flash files.
As I said though, I am not one to question his reasoning.

Though it really hurts me to see my favorite series slowly dying off.

They said it couldn't be done.
They said it shouldn't be done.
And after twenty years we were pretty sure it wouldn't be done.

But time makes fools of us all.
Even more so in Hollywood's case.

Regarding to a cult classic film, quite possibly the most recognized modern vampire movie to date.

Of course, its The Lost Boys.
I died a little inside back on January 2007 when I knew the film was being shot.

Before this, I had read the script for The Lost Girls, and I didn't honestly think it could have been any worse than that.
Yet humanity has taken failure to a whole new level.

Oh my god , there aren't even ways to express how bad this movie is..
Go hide your children.
Better yet, do them a favor of growing up having to come into a world where movies like this even exist, and fucking shoot them.

Remember Randy Pausch?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Pau sch

Not even four weeks ago, I was assigned to watch his video "The Last Lecture" for an assignement in my speech class.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_Mqi cxSo

And he has just passed away today.
It feels a bit weird.
